Our Spring Calendar of Events!

“African Americans in Hawaii - A Search for Identity.”
Friday March 12th 6pm - 8pm at the Garden Stage

The “The African Heritage Cultural Center of Kauai” is sponsoring a black history month event featuring Dr. Ayin Adams new book “African Americans in Hawaii - A Search for Identity.” March 12th 6pm - 8pm at the Storybook Theatre in Hanapepe. Dr. Adams will talk about her book and the inspiration behind it along with Dr. Kathryn Wadell Takara (who‘s own father was a Buffalo Soldier). Dr. Takara will also talk about her new book “Tourmalines Beyond the Ebony Portal”. There will be entertainment and pupus. Voice Weavers will open our celebration for 2010 with African songs and chants. A call to “Come here the news” We will have drumming and dance with the Love Tribe. Helpful Theatre will honor our First Lady Michelle Obama in their performance piece “Michelle #1“. A representative from the 2010 Census Bureau will speak and we will honor our Mayor Bernard Carvalho with a book presentation. Several Kauai residents are featured in Ayin’s book with portrait’s and bio‘s. Each will be telling the story of their walk here on Kauai and in the Hawaiian Islands with the aloha and timeless memories they share.

* Elwood Machado & Friends - A Music & Talk - Story Journey
Friday March 19th 7pm - 9pm at Garden Stage

In the family spirit of musical kanikapila, Elwood Machado and friends Hanaka’ulani Montgomery and Sabra Kauka will share an evening with Sparky’s Garden guests and their families. From the musical Machado family of O’ahu, Elwood brings a wealth of musical knowledge for sharing with audience members. The evening will be a rich collection of music and stories about Hawaii, its land and its people.

*Na Koa Kalani - The Story of Princess Victoria Ka’iulani
Friday March 26th - 4pm & 7pm on the Garden Stage


Kalei’u’i and Kawena

Kawena Warren will portrait Princess Ka’iulani in Storybook’s Spring theatrical production and will be featured at this years ‘Orchid and Art Festival’ on our Garden Stage. Also in the cast are Kalei’u’i Hosaka playing a storyteller & Annie Cleghorn, Jeanne Warren as a storyteller & Lili’uokalani and Mark Jeffers as a storyteller & Uncle Louie Stevenson. The multi media drama tells the story of Ka’iulani’s sheroic life in turbulent revolutionary Hawaii of the 1890’s.

Six consecutive classes beginning on March 16 from 10 am until 11 am.

March 16: Getting Started, Benefits of Signing, signs for basic needs
March 23: Uses of sign language as a learning tool, signs for food & drink
March 30: Overcoming pitfalls, signs for animals
April 6: Everyday signs, review, questions, books & games
April 13: Using signs to help toddlers identify emotions, signs for body & feelings
April 20: Using sign language as a multisensory teaching tool, signs for colors and the alphabet
